Delimitation an attempt to nullify Assam Agitation: Upamanyu Hazarika

GUWAHATI: The delimitation process and the draft delimitation of constituencies are being claimed to be measures to safeguard the identity of the indigenous people of Assam but this claim is false and without any foundation, said Upamanyu Hazarika, convenor of Prabajan Virodhi Manch, while addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Tuesday.

He said, “Delimitation is always on the basis of population and three independent studies demonstrate that Bangladeshi migrants will become a majority in Assam between 2040 to 2051. Delimitation, which is done on the basis of population, can in no manner be a safeguard as existing constituencies will turn into Bangladeshi majority. Secondly, to assert that the Assam Accord, NRC and Clause 6 safeguards have failed is not only false, but also mischievous. NRC has not failed as yet. Though a large number of foreigners have been included in the NRC, however, proper re-verification of NRC will ensure exclusion of such foreigners.”
